The Team

We were a team you and I
So many amazing things we’ve done
When the pup grew up and looked to me
The two of us were one

I’ve counted on you for so many years
You were my partner my eyes and ears
You patrolled my yard while my family slept
And kept us safe so many years

You watched over my precious daughter
From a toddler to now grown
You couldn’t have been more of a big brother
If your kind was of our own

Your loyalty will never be matched
Nor your heart so pure with care
Today I send you away from here
From the aging body you now bare

My head so heavy, my tears they flow
With the memories in my heart
For a woman and a Shepherd dog
The Team at last shall part

I believe I will see you again someday
My Sam, my Sammy Boy
Every single day for fifteen years
You have been a pleasure and a joy

So with tremendous honor and all my love
I will send you on your way
Where you can guard the gates of Heaven now
As you did here every day.
